David Kakishiba,
President
President David Kakishiba is the Executive
Director of the East Bay Asian Youth Center (EBAYC), an independent community
organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering young people and their
families to be life-long builders of a just and caring multi-cultural society.
EBAYC has a multi-racial membership of over 500 families residing in Oakland's
San Antonio community. Through a integrated network of community learning
centers, EBAYC helps families improve their quality of life through education
and social action. Kakishiba has served as Executive Director since 1980.
Over the past twenty-five years,
Kakishiba has served in various leadership capacities. Kakishiba is the author
of Measure K - The Kids First! Initiative, the landmark citizens' ballot
measure that requires the City of Oakland to provide a minimum funding
standard for children services. "Kids First!" passed with nearly 75% of the
vote in November 1996, and today, its generates over $7 million in new
revenues each year for children without raising taxes. Kakishiba has served on
various boards and commissions, including the California Assembly Speaker's
Commission on Police Conduct, the Asian Pacific Environmental Network Board of
Directors, and the Berkeley Police Review Commission.
In March 2002, Kakishiba was elected to the Oakland Board of Education,
representing the San Antonio, Eastlake, Chinatown, Bella Vista, Grand-Lake,
and Crocker Highlands neighborhoods.
Kakishiba, formerly Vice President, was elected President of the Board, by his
colleagues, on January 4, 2006.
